The stand-up world is attracting more and more artists in France, but few launch themselves so late with such sincerity. At 50 years old, Jimmy, known as Mister Jim, has gradually established himself in the stand-up universe thanks to his authenticity, his self-deprecating humor and his involvement in Comedy Clubs in the South region. Between professional career, organizing stand-up evenings and preparing his future show, the comedian is building his path far from the usual clichés of the industry.
Like many artists, it was during the Covid period that Mister Jim truly discovered his passion for stand-up. At the time, he began by posting humorous videos on social media to ward off boredom. However, he quickly understood that he already missed stand-up… without even having stepped on stage yet. « The videos were nice, but I missed the audience’s reaction. I needed to see people laugh live », he explains.
This desire pushes him to try stand-up for the first time in December 2021, as the opening act for comedian Anthony Joubert. A first stage performance that remains engraved in his memory and marks a real turning point in his career. « I was incredibly stressed. Speaking in public doesn’t scare me, but making people laugh is totally different. »
Before launching into stand-up, Jimmy worked in large-scale retail, notably at Auchan. Today, he still holds a position as a department manager in a hardware store chain. A professional experience that allowed him to develop ease with the public, useful today on stage. But according to him, stand-up remains a unique exercise, much more demanding than it appears. « Making people laugh is probably the most complicated art. Not everyone can do stand-up. »
Gradual rise in stand-up
For the past five years, Mister Jim has been performing on stand-up stages throughout the South region. At the same time, he has also been organizing his own Comedy Clubs for three years, notably in establishments in Cannes or elsewhere on the Côte d’Azur. Thanks to his work in stand-up, many venues now call upon him to organize their comedy evenings.
« At first, it was me who approached establishments. Today, it’s often they who come looking for me to organize stand-up evenings. » This evolution well illustrates the growing place he occupies in the local stand-up scene, where he has built a reputation based on consistency and professionalism.
Authenticity at the heart of stand-up
For Mister Jim, stand-up represents a true artistic marathon. « Many think that stand-up is just talent. But talent is something you work on. » Writing occupies an essential place in his daily life. Each stand-up sketch constantly evolves through performances and audience reactions. « You perform a passage, you go home, you watch the video and you rework what works or doesn’t. A joke can change a thousand times. » His humor is mainly inspired by his personal life: his daily life, his family, his recent separation or his return to single life at 50. A sincerity that now constitutes his trademark in stand-up. « I talk a lot about my life because people can feel when you’re authentic on stage. » The comedian believes that authenticity remains the main quality in modern stand-up. According to him, many young artists fall into the trap of recitation and end up losing their personality.
« The problem with some comedians today is that they recite a text. Stand-up, normally, is telling an anecdote as if you’re talking to someone. » Even though he admires artists like Jean-Marie Bigard, Franck Dubosc or Roman Frayssinet, Mister Jim refuses to copy other stand-up comedians. « Today, there are too many stand-uppers who look alike. Me, I just try to do Mister Jim. »
From Comedy Clubs to future solo show
Organizing a Comedy Club requires real preparation work. For Mister Jim, a good stand-up lineup doesn’t happen by chance. You need to choose the right artists, create an appropriate atmosphere and especially ensure the right technical conditions. « A real stand-up venue is a closed room, a stage, silence and spotlights. In a bar or restaurant, you have to constantly adapt. »
To select the comedians who participate in his stand-up evenings, Mister Jim relies on a network of nearly 200 artists spread throughout the South region. He watches their videos, analyzes their style and then builds balanced lineups between beginners, intermediate artists and more experienced comedians. In addition to performing, the comedian maintains a very active relationship with his audience through social media. On Instagram and TikTok, he daily shares videos, stories and anecdotes related to stand-up, thus strengthening his community. Today, Mister Jim takes the stage more than a hundred times a year between his stand-up performances and the organization of Comedy Clubs. An intense activity that doesn’t prevent him from preparing his main objective: finally writing his solo show. « My real wish now is to finish my show and launch it in early 2027. »
You will be able to see Mister Jim on stage in the coming weeks during several stand-up evenings and Comedy Clubs organized throughout the South region. The comedian will continue his tour with a series of dates between Vaucluse, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Cannes and Vitrolles, confirming his growing place in the regional stand-up universe.
Mister Jim will perform in the Alpes-Maritimes on Thursday, June 18 at the V and B in Cannes as well as in many cities in southern France.
With this new series of stand-up evenings, Mister Jim continues to perform on multiple stages and unite an ever-growing audience around his authentic humor and self-deprecation.
