Nice: The Taxi Hub at the Cutting Edge of Technology

Created in 1995, the Nice taxi hub is a cooperative, an association that has brought together almost all the taxi drivers. It includes 360 out of the 437 taxis in the city of Nice. This hub is the result of the Sapin law, which prohibits municipalities from managing private companies. Composed solely of independent drivers, this “magnificent system,” as described by Patrick Giovagnoli, connects customers seeking a driver with the vehicle closest to them.

“We have here one of the most efficient systems in Europe; only the city of Geneva has an equivalent organization that greatly inspired us. However, we developed this technique by incorporating GPS, which allows for better working comfort and economic savings in fuel for the drivers, as well as quality service with much less waiting time for our clients,” explains Robert Lesbats, the administrator of the hub.

For Rudy Salles: “This system has been very well managed for nearly 15 years now. We observe a decrease in complaints from users against taxi drivers, even though abuses still exist. And when there is a proven fault, the disciplinary committee is there to sanction those who take advantage…”
