Since October 7th, all demonstrations aimed at supporting the Palestinian people in Nice have been prohibited by order of the Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes.
This is the fifth time that Hugues Moutouh has banned a demonstration in support of Palestine, since the events of October 7th. Organized by the collective “For a just and lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis,” the gathering is scheduled for this Saturday, November 11th, at Place Garibaldi in Nice.
The Prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes justifies this decision by citing risks of public disorder, confrontations, the persistence of the terrorist threat, and the resurgence of anti-Semitic acts. A legal appeal, which often results in a favorable outcome, has been filed by the organizers with the Administrative Court. The demonstration on Saturday, November 4th was thus able to take place.
A gathering against anti-Semitism this Sunday
Initiated by the mayor, Christian Estrosi, a rally “for the Republic and against anti-Semitism” will be organized in Nice on Sunday, November 12th at 11:30 am. It will be held around the Monument du Centenaire in front of the Théâtre de Verdure. A first gathering in support of the Israeli people took place in front of the City Hall on October 9th, 48 hours after the Hamas attack, and brought together more than 500 citizens.
During a City Council session on November 7th, the mayor of Nice reiterated his unwavering support for Israel and spoke out against a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Before observing a minute of silence, he notably stated: “I am not afraid to say it, yes the Palestinian people have the right to live in peace in an independent state, but this state cannot exist as long as they are under the yoke of Hamas.”
Furthermore, the City Council has recently approved the creation of a branch of the Shoah Memorial in Nice.
