As part of the policy for integrating disabled people, the city of Nice is making every effort to facilitate the daily life of people with disabilities. The goal is to ensure that a person with a disability is like anyone else, able to move around, work, and enjoy their leisure activities.
In 2010, the handiplage service was a real success, both among residents of Nice and tourists, with 1,622 launches into the water over three months, representing an increase of more than 20% compared to 2009.
As part of leisure activities, the city of Nice has established two handiplages allowing disabled people to enjoy the pleasures of the sea and swim safely.
From Tuesday, June 21 to September 11, 2011, seven days a week (including holidays), from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last launch into the water at 5:45 p.m.), people with disabilities, regardless of age, can access the sea safely on the beaches of Carras and Centenaire with:
- Adapted signage;
- A nearby first aid station with access for disabled people;
- Adapted facilities, with reserved parking spaces near beach facilities, showers, restrooms, and parasols;
- A route or access ramp on the beach allowing access to the sea;
- Two tiralos (chairs that allow disabled people to swim), two handifloat chairs, and one hippocampe chair;
- Seven handiplagists, seasonal staff employed by the city to welcome and assist disabled people in bathing (transfer from wheelchair to tiralo, launch into water, shower, etc.);
- An audioplage on the Carras site, with a system of sound beacons, allowing visually impaired or blind individuals to enjoy swimming independently;
- Possibility of reaching the sites via the MobilโAzur transport service. Registrations and reservations at the toll-free number 0 805 20 06 06. โฌ1 per trip.
