Yves KLEIN – James Lee BYARS – Anish KAPOOR

June 30 – December 16, 2012
Opening on Friday, June 29, 2012 at 7:00 PM

This exhibition will bring together three emblematic and enigmatic figures of contemporary art. Three artists from different generations and backgrounds who share an attraction to the alliance of the ephemeral, the imaginary, and the spiritual, of fullness and emptiness. In a quest for total art, they offer through installations or performances, sensitive and poetic experiences of the world where monochromy plays a crucial role. The MAMAC will seek to reveal the connections that intimately link these three monuments of art through specific installations immersing the viewer in a colorful bath: IKB for Yves Klein, white for James Lee Byars, and red for Anish Kapoor.

HENRI MATISSE: THE CUT-OUT SKY
Genesis of the art of cut gouache paper, collection from the Matisse Museum

June 23 – September 23, 2012
Opening on Friday, June 22, 2012 at 7:00 PM

From prestigious loans from international museums and private collections gathered around the museum’s collection, this exhibition explores the connection the artist establishes between drawing, painting, and sculpture, culminating in the cutouts of colored paper. This exhibition brings together works that allow us to follow the artist’s journey from his first creations, such as Still Life with Books, 1890, to the large compositions in cut gouache papers, such as Flowers and Fruits, 1952-1953, preserved at the museum.

This exhibition is held on the occasion of the publication of the art book “Henri Matisse, The Cut-Out Sky,” by Jacabook editions of Milan and Citadelles & Mazenot of Paris, which honors the future donation by the Matisse family of a set of elements in gouache cut-papers not used in his works by Henri Matisse, and the donation of the ceramic “The Pool” by Mr. and Mrs. Claude Duthuit.
