The City of Nice opts for a new artificial intelligence solution to improve cyclist safety. Named Safe City, it allows for the video ticketing of vehicles illegally parked on bike lanes.
Presented on December 2nd by Anthony Borre, First Deputy Delegate for Proximity, Security, Housing, and Urban Renovation, this is an artificial intelligence solution that detects vehicles parked on bike lanes in real-time. This new system is an extension of the object counting and classification solution presented last June.
This new innovative solution will allow for easier enforcement against infractions, enhance cyclist safety, and streamline traffic flow. Moreover, with its enhanced reactivity, it allows for quicker ticketing of offenders. This initiative was deployed on Saturday, December 3rd, following a test phase that lasted a month. During this non-ticketing period, the system registered an average of 40 alerts per day. Initially, six cameras equipped with this system will cover nine areas of interest along the new bike lanes of the green grid. The affected routes are Durante, Congrรจs, and Buffa, then Dante.
With this new system, the Urban Supervision Center (USC) is immediately alerted when a vehicle is parked for more than one minute on the bike lanes included in these routes. The USC agents will then verify the situation and can video ticket the vehicles in violation.
