After eight years of activity, the bookstore Les Parleuses in Nice is about to close its doors. Located in the center of Nice, the independent bookstore will cease operations on May 13, on the occasion of a closing evening that will take the form of a literary launch.
Created in 2017 by Maud Pouyé and Anouk Aubert, the bookstore quickly became an important hub of local cultural life. Although it is often presented as a feminist bookstore, the managers emphasize that it is above all a general bookstore, with a particularly rich section dedicated to feminist issues and social struggles.
A departure to change lives
Contrary to what this closure might suggest, the decision is not related to economic difficulties. “We are closing for personal reasons related to a change of region“, explains Maud Pouyé. The two managers have indeed chosen to leave the Côte d’Azur to move to Vaucluse, with a desire to change their living environment.
“It’s a desire to go and live in a quieter place, not in a metropolis“, clarifies the bookstore owner. Both are about to take over an independent bookstore in a small town in the north of the department. However, the project has not yet been officially announced, as administrative procedures are still underway. “I can’t tell you more“, smiles Maud Pouyé.
Eight years of cultural adventure
Since its opening, Les Parleuses has hosted numerous meetings, debates and author signings. The bookstore became a meeting place for a loyal audience, attached to exchanges around literature and ideas.
“It has been eight extraordinary years. A wonderful professional adventure“, confides Maud Pouyé. Over time, the booksellers have built strong bonds with their readers. “For eight years we have created very strong relationships with people. Of course, there’s a lot of emotion.” The managers nevertheless say they are leaving at the right time. “We’re also happy that it’s ending before we get tired of it“, smiles the bookstore owner, referring to a departure that is chosen rather than imposed.
One last evening on May 13
The official closure will take place on May 13, during an evening open to the public. The event will also mark the release of the novel The Daughters of the Bookstore, by Giulia Foïs, whose plot unfolds in Nice around a bookstore.
A symbolic wink to salute the history of the place. After this final evening, the bookstore Les Parleuses will definitively close its doors, leaving behind eight years of cultural commitment and literary encounters in the heart of Nice.
