On Friday, November 13, 2009, the program for the requalification of the Nice expressway, Pierre Mathis, was unveiled.
Numerous measures are planned to renovate this artery. Particular emphasis is placed on:
– Protection of homes against noise pollution,
– Improvement of security,
– Beautification of the road.
Start of work: Since Monday, November 9, 2009
Cost of the first phase: 14 million Euros including tax
Duration: 14 months
This infrastructure development is part of the Noise Prevention Plan in the Environment. The exceptional living environment and the natural and urban landscape that Nice enjoys must be accompanied by a pleasant soundscape.
## A Necessary Requalification
After the commissioning of the northern roadway of the Pierre Mathis Way, between Fabron and Saint Augustin, and the one-way implementation of both roadways that occurred in November 2007, the southern roadway, constructed between 1960 and 1969, needed requalification.
The roadway is in poor condition, and all the equipment (restraint systems, traffic management equipment, signage, lighting) is outdated. Moreover, to limit noise pollution, it is necessary to implement acoustic barriers.
The works mainly cover the stretch from Saint Augustin to Saint Philippe, about 4 km long.
## Large-Scale Works
The equipment will be refurbished, noise barriers installed, and acoustic asphalt will be applied on road sections not yet equipped.
A decorative touch will be added with the use of 9 LED-equipped masts at entrances and exits, lighting of green spaces and the Baumettes Wall (St Philippe exit) with 113 embedded spotlights, and the lighting of the Magnan Bridge cladding.
7,500 square meters of green spaces will be created or redeveloped.
## The Provisional Work Schedule
The duration of the first phase of work is 14 months, starting from Monday, November 9, 2009.
## A Significant Investment
The operation’s cost has been estimated at approximately 23 million Euros for the two phases (second phase: emergency lane + planter),
The cost of the first phase is 14 million Euros including tax,
## The “Green Site” Approach
These various landscaped areas punctuating the path of the southern roadway of the Pierre Mathis Way will be developed in a sustainable development logic where water conservation and solar power will have their place. Indeed, the selected plant palette references more than 50 different species, which require very little water.
For the first time in a project of this scale, all irrigation commands will be powered by solar panels!
Numerous measures are planned to significantly renovate this artery, including the application of asphalt reducing vehicle rolling noise by four times, at access ramps and in areas not yet equipped (Magnan-Saint Philippe), and the installation of “anti-noise” walls along the southern roadway, on the resident side.
