Christian Estrosi writes: “Nice stands alongside Iranians who aspire to freedom.” The message accompanies the call for mobilization. The municipality invites the population to gather in an international context marked by high tensions following American strikes against Iran.

The situation in the Middle East is sparking local reactions. The city of Nice says it is following developments closely. The municipal initiative comes as several French nationals are currently in areas affected by tensions.

A support cell activated

Faced with the international situation, Christian Estrosi announced this weekend the activation of a support cell. The measure concerns French and Nice residents currently stranded in the United Arab Emirates or Israel.

The mayor states: “faced with the current international situation, I have requested the activation of a support cell for French and Nice residents currently stranded in the United Arab Emirates or Israel. Concerned individuals — or their relatives — can send a WhatsApp message to: 00 33 6 83 32 44 65 specifying: • Name • First name • City of origin • Situation context We are already supporting a group from a musical association in Nice and Cannes, currently stranded in Doha, and are fully mobilized alongside the competent authorities to organize their return as soon as possible.”

This contact number is meant to enable quick assessment of individual situations. The municipality mentions personalized support in coordination with competent authorities. A group from a musical association in Nice and Cannes is currently stranded in Doha. The municipality says it is working to organize their return.

The support cell is intended to guide families, centralize information and facilitate procedures. Municipal communications stress the mobilization of services.

Government interpellation and political reactions

For his part, Eric Ciotti has written to the Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot. In this letter, the deputy mentions the situation in the United Arab Emirates and concerns expressed by French nationals.

The letter states: “in my capacity as vice-president of the France-United Arab Emirates friendship group in the National Assembly, I wish to draw your attention to the particularly concerning situation in the Middle East, and more specifically in the United Arab Emirates. Strategic friends and allies of France in the region, essential partners in terms of security, military cooperation and regional stability, the United Arab Emirates are today facing direct aggression from Iran. I wish to alert you to the growing concern among our compatriots in the region. I have received dozens of testimonies and messages expressing the concerns of French people, and in particular Nice residents, living in or visiting the Emirates, regarding their safety and that of their families. I ask you to clarify the situation for French nationals established in the United Arab Emirates. What concrete measures have been taken to guarantee their protection? Are security arrangements and evacuation plans fully operational? Is strengthened communication to our nationals effective or planned? The protection of our compatriots must be an absolute priority in this moment of extreme tension.”

Another political reaction is heard in Nice. Julien Picot, running mate on the Nice Popular Front list, has reacted to the American strikes ordered by Donald Trump against Iran. The statement is part of a call for peace and self-determination.

Julien Picot declared: “the massive strikes ordered by Donald Trump against Iran constitute another blatant violation of international law. These bombings, carried out outside any legitimacy and in the midst of diplomatic negotiations, plunge the world once again into a spiral of war and chaos (…) Nothing in this operation aims at peace or democracy, everything seeks to strengthen American control over an already wounded region. As with Iraq or Libya, the death of a president or leader will solve nothing. It will only fuel hatred, violence, and instability. What peoples need is not a change of master, but the right to freely choose their destiny, without pressure, without sanctions, without bombs. The self-determination of peoples must be the only compass (…) We call on France and the European Union to firmly condemn this new American aggression, to demand an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of genuine negotiations under UN auspices. Peace is not an empty word, it is a vital emergency. The Iranian people, like all peoples of the world, have the right to dignity, freedom and sovereignty.”

The rally planned for Monday in front of the town hall is a moment for public expression. The city of Nice displays support for the Iranian people. Several local political leaders also call on national and international authorities. The international situation thus finds a direct echo on the Nice scene.
