2030 Olympics: Éric Ciotti and Renaud Muselier clash after withdrawal of ice events from Nice

Latest News

The allocation of ice sports events for the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to Lyon has triggered a particularly tense exchange between Éric Ciotti and Renaud Muselier. The mayor of Nice and the president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region are mutually accusing each other of being responsible for the failure of the Nice project. A decision that is also sparking reactions in the sports world.

The decision to transfer the ice sports events of the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games from Nice to Lyon continues to cause upheaval. Since the announcement by the Organizing Committee for the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (Cojop), Éric Ciotti and Renaud Muselier have been engaged in a public confrontation through written correspondence.

The president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region first pointed to the responsibility of the new Nice municipal administration. In a letter addressed to the mayor of Nice, Renaud Muselier estimated that the refusal to make the Allianz Riviera available for hockey competitions led to the loss of the events.

“The ice sports events of the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games are not leaving Nice by fate. They are not disappearing by bad luck, nor as a result of a decision imposed from Paris or Lausanne,” declared Renaud Muselier, before adding: “they are leaving Nice because a political choice was made: that of refusing the temporary adaptation of the Allianz Riviera to host Olympic hockey.”

Éric Ciotti claims a choice in favor of local finances

In a response addressed to the Regional president, Éric Ciotti rejects any responsibility for the abandonment of the Nice Olympic project. The mayor of Nice attributes the failure to the strategy defended by the Region around the temporary transformation of the Allianz Riviera into an Olympic ice rink.

This defeat is yours. It is the result of your choices, your stubbornness and your inability to adapt your position when it was still possible.”

During a statement broadcast yesterday evening, Éric Ciotti also defended the municipal decision. According to the city of Nice, negotiations revealed that the use of the Allianz Riviera would have immobilized the venue for at least nine months, equivalent to a complete season for OGC Nice.

The municipality also states that public spending related to the project exceeded 150 million euros. Faced with this situation, Éric Ciotti claims to have made a decision in favor of local finances and neighborhood sports facilities. “The people of Nice did not lose the Games, they gained 150 million euros.”

The city announces that the sums not committed to the Olympic project could be directed towards the renovation and modernization of sports infrastructure in the territory. Swimming pools, sports fields and local facilities are among the announced investments.

In the same statement, Éric Ciotti also attacks Renaud Muselier’s political record. “History will record that Renaud Muselier failed on the only major issue he personally championed during his ten years in office, before leaving the Regional presidency to retreat to the Senate to avoid another defeat, an electoral one this time.”

The concern of skater Adam Siao Him Fa

Beyond the political confrontation, the decision is also sparking reactions in the Nice sports world. Adam Siao Him Fa, French and European figure skating champion, member of the Nice Baie des Anges team and registered at the Jean-Bouin ice rink, regrets the abandonment of the Olympic project.

For the athlete, the announcement represents “a disappointment, because figure skating will not take place at home. Moreover, it should have led to a new ice rink,” as he confided to France 3 Côte d’Azur.

The question of infrastructure dedicated to ice sports is also among the skater’s concerns. Adam Siao Him Fa highlights the current state of the Jean-Bouin ice rink and believes that the abandonment of the Olympic project could complicate the creation of a new facility.

The Nice champion indicates he was not consulted in the context of the project to build a new ice rink. Adam Siao Him Fa believes it will be “even more difficult” to obtain a new structure after the withdrawal of ice sports events from the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A lasting political divide around the 2030 Olympics

The withdrawal of ice sports events from Nice now goes beyond the mere question of organizing the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. On one side, Renaud Muselier maintains that the decision stems directly from Nice’s refusal to make the Allianz Riviera available. On the other, Éric Ciotti defends a choice presented as more favorable to local public finances and everyday sports facilities.

Four and a half years before the Olympic deadline, the issue reveals a deep political divide around the legacy that the 2030 Winter Games could have left for Nice and the Côte d’Azur.
