Catherine Ségurane, a character who is among the most famous in Nice, is depicted as a common woman, a laundress by trade. This woman, the “érouina Nissarda,” is at the heart of Niçoise identity.
She symbolizes, in the collective imagination, both the resistance of a city against invaders and the mobilization of an entire people, particularly that of women whose fate, in times of war, was often predetermined.
