Matisse, a Summer 2013 in Nice

Latest News

A Summer for Matisse. The city of Nice has an ambitious project with this exhibition on the master of Fauvism. Henri Matisse is a man from the north, and like most of his contemporaries, he was captivated by the light of the South, which he discovered at the age of 35 in Saint Tropez, in the year 1905. He traveled extensively, and in December 1917, he settled in Nice. This is where his love affair with the capital of the French Riviera began, and the theme unfolds over eight stages dedicated to this genius. Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869, in Cateau-Cambrรฉsis, and he died on November 3, 1954, in Nice, where he is buried in Cimiez.

matisse_2013-2.jpg This event, featured by eight museums in the city of Nice, will showcase the many facets of this artist. Nice step by step with Matisse, tracing the master across eight stages, eight iconic locations in our city. The Matisse Museum will offer us a symphony with: Music at Work.

Then, without a long journey, the archaeological museum will show another aspect of Matisse with “La Piscine,” one of his famous ceramics, with the Roman baths of Cimiez providing an excellent setting for this piece. We descend into modern town, and at the Theatre of Photography and Image, it will be Matisse, Women, and Muses. Here, we find the painter and the sculptor with women as the central theme.

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art will, in its way, pay homage with a “Hello Mr. Matisse.” Henri Matisse will illustrate jazz in his own way, and it is at the Palais Lascaris that this tribute will be made, far from baroque music and the harpsichord for once. The Ponchettes Gallery will offer a wonderful retrospective on the posters dedicated and devoted to this lover of life. In 1941, suffering from cancer, he asked his doctors to give him three or four more years to complete his work.

The Massรฉna Museum will present its exhibition on the theme of palms, palm trees, and palmettes. Matisse was greatly inspired by these since his trip to Tahiti in 1930. The Fine Arts Museum, better known as Jules Chรฉret, will dedicate its exhibition to Gustave Moreau, who, in 1892, welcomed Henri Matisse into his studio. It is fitting to conclude this cultural summer, which allows us to do more than tan mindlessly, with this painter who, receiving a young man in his studio, opened the doors to fame. The exhibitions will be accompanied by concerts where painting is illustrated by music, and commentaries on Matisse’s work. This summer for Matisse will begin on June 21, ending on September 23. Three months to discover, love, and appreciate him.
