Nice will be the host city for the upcoming European Road Cycling Championships. The competition will be held from September 14 to 18, and many top riders in the discipline have confirmed their presence.
“We needed a city with a cycling culture.” A statement by David Lappartient, president of the Union Europรฉenne de Cyclisme (UEC), to justify the choice of the city of Nice for hosting the upcoming European Road Cycling Championships.
Indeed, the capital of the Cรดte d’Azur has served as a stage city for the Tour de France 36 times. It is also the host of the famous race, Paris-Nice, which gathers the world’s best riders annually. As David Lappartient states, “there was no better choice for this edition.”
The athletes present will complete a circuit between Nice and Monaco, with the ascent of the Col des Quatre Chemins and the Col d’รze, finishing on the Promenade des Anglais.
Big names on the starting line
Long reserved for amateur riders, this Cรดte d’Azur edition will see the world’s best cyclists compete. “The regulations of the International Cycling Union (UCI) prohibited professional riders from taking part in the race. But we pushed the UEC to change this rule, and this edition will be the first with professional riders at the starting line.” assures David Lappartient.
The public will therefore have the opportunity next September to see Christopher Froome, two-time Tour de France winner, Alberto Contador, winner of the three grand tours, and Romain Bardet, the rising star of French cycling, compete.
Fans of women’s and junior cycling will also be well catered for, as the best in each category are expected to be present as well.
The event is thus set for September 14 to 18.
