Genevois, a rock in red and black

Latest News

In top form for nearly two months, Romain Genevois has transformed into the leader of the Gym’s defense. Humble and aware of his potential, he hopes to secure the team’s place in the league as soon as possible so that he can breathe easier. Therefore, a real challenge awaits the Nice central defender and his teammates this Sunday in Saint-Etienne.

Simple, composed, and effective. Romain Genevois is in the press conference as he is on the field. Having had a solid second half of the season, he brings stability to a Nice defense that still concedes too many goals (45 goals, 12th defense). With 33 matches out of a possible 35 this season, he is the second most used defender behind Jordan Amavi (34). He also scored the equalizing goal against Marseille on January 23rd (a 2-1 victory, the last home win this season), his very first in Ligue 1. “I know the coach expects more from me,” he says with a smile.

Ups and Downs

Arriving on the Côte d’Azur in the summer of 2012, coming from Tours with 112 Ligue 2 matches under his belt, he has already experienced everything under Claude Puel’s management. An incredible season for his first in red and black (4th place) followed by securing the team’s position for the past two seasons and a certain psychological fatigue setting in. “The first season was extraordinary, almost an accident. We got everything right away. Not everything needs to be questioned, patience is necessary,” admits Romain Genevois.

A Team Leader

Repositioned at center-back, “my preferred position,” he is the deputy to Mathieu Bodmer and sometimes more. Against Caen and at Rennes, the 27-year-old Haitian defender thwarted all the opponent’s attacks with brilliance. Recoveries, decisive tackles, assured clearances—Genevois’s skill set has broadened over the months. “I feel like I’m reaching new levels. During the break, I had a discussion with the coach about my performance. Since then, I give my all to be as consistent as possible,” he explains.

The Future?

Committed to Nice for the long term, Romain Genevois says he is more than involved with the Côte d’Azur club: “There are still things for me to do. I still have years left in me here.” And afterward, a coaching career? “No, it’s the same path as a professional career; you have to think about family life. Being a consultant, why not?” concludes the Nice player. With his straightforwardness and sharp analysis, there’s no doubt he could surprise more than a few.
