In June 2012, when AS Monaco was promoted back to Ligue 1 after spending two years in the second division, Valère Germain could be proud of having significantly contributed to this achievement. “Tigrou” indeed ended the season with 14 goals and 7 assists. More than impressive statistics.
But ASM aimed high, very high. Falcao arrived that summer. Six months later, it was Emmanuel Rivière’s turn, who had already joined the competition in Ligue 2. Then Berbatov joined the team.
Germain then became the second or even third choice in his position. As a result, Valère has been struggling for two years. The opportunity to play consecutive matches rarely presents itself despite impressive performances when he is on the field.
He arrives in Nice determined to revive his career and finally achieve his goals in Ligue 1.
How did your arrival at the club go?
I’ve been in contact with OGC Nice for several years. We had already discussed a lot in the past, and this time it was the right time. I was very well received by my teammates as well as the entire staff. My routines weren’t disrupted. I reconnected with former teammates like Papy Mendy, and I didn’t even have to move!
Do you have a specific goal for the number of goals?
The goals are primarily collective. We have quality offensively, and I hope that the chemistry shown against Lausanne (4-1 victory including a brace from Valère Germain) between Alassane Pléa, Hatem Ben Arfa, and me can continue. Personally, I do hope to reach the ten-goal mark in Ligue 1. It’s a symbolic milestone for a striker in the championship.
You seem to already have a good understanding with Ben Arfa, the other offensive recruit…
There is still a lot of work to do for our partnership to be perfect, but we’re already on the right track. There’s a desire to connect on the field. He is truly a very interesting player. His technique in training is impressive.
Will you be able to play in the first match of the season against AS Monaco (Saturday, August 8 at 9 PM)?
Yes, I will be there. This was a point that was negotiated between the two clubs. It will be special for me, even strange. I have spent the last ten years of my life in Monaco, and facing them in the opening match is really something special, but on the field, I will give my all for my current team.
If you score, will you celebrate your goal?
I don’t know; we’ll see in the heat of the moment. I don’t want to disrespect the Monaco supporters who have supported me all these years. But if it happens in the 95th minute and it allows us to win 1-0…
You are loaned without a purchase option, how do you feel about this situation?
First, I thank Nice for taking me on a simple loan, which is becoming less common. They really wanted me, and I also wanted to come. I will return to Monaco at the end of the season, and I hope I can be happy with what I’ve accomplished and that OGC will be pleased to have trusted me.
