The exhibition « EYES OF THE SEA » is an invitation to a visual, scientific, and artistic journey into biodiversity, specifically that of the Mediterranean marine world from the 19th century to the present day.
In two centuries, the image of the sea and its inhabitants has completely transformed.
Gradually, the representation of the marine environment has been revealed to humanity through drawings largely based on imagination. The first illustrations, often imaginary, sometimes naive and generally approximate, were later replaced by those of the first naturalists, more faithful to reality.
Today, the evolution of observation techniques and the development of modern photography allow for a lively representation of marine wealth. Moreover, thanks to new exploration techniques, scientists are developing observation plans for a direct study in the marine environment of its inhabitants and ecosystems.
Recently, citizen observations have been taken into consideration to multiply the information available. These participatory sciences allow the public to become active for Science and to understand the importance of marine ecosystems in our lives and their necessary protection.
The exhibition is structured around four themes, allowing the visitor to compare representations of marine fauna through the ages. Between Art and Science, it prompts questions about marine biodiversity and encourages engagement in its protection.
