Freshly arrived in Leicester, Papy Mendy (24 years old) is ready to take on a new major challenge: establishing himself at the English champion. Despite a busy schedule, the former captain of Nice has agreed to reflect on his experience in Nice, his growth, and his future prospects.
Papy, 3 years after you arrived, you are now leaving Nice…
That’s right. Sportingly, last season was very successful, we had a great time as a group, both on the field and personally. Even though OGC Nice will continue to grow and the club has ambition, the president had told me he would let me leave if a good opportunity arose that was beneficial for everyone. He kept his word, and I’m thankful for that.
What do you take away from these 3 seasons in red and black?
There are so many things… When I arrived, the club was coming off a 4th place finish but had missed out on qualifying for the Europa League. The first two seasons were a bit difficult, but no one gave up. It eventually paid off, and Nice is about to return to Europe. Leaving under such circumstances is a great pride for me. On the field, in the locker room, at the stadium, we truly lived through intense moments. It will remain etched forever.
Who are the people who left a mark on you at Nice?
There are many. As I said, the president and the general manager trusted me right away. I can’t overlook coach Puel. I learned a lot from him. In the locker room, I got along well with everyone, whether in the initial years or the last, where I even got to play with my cousin Alex. I won’t name anyone to avoid forgetting someone. Even though I might miss Romain Genevois’s antics…
How do you feel about joining the English champion?
An immense pride. It’s an honor to join the Foxes, who are coming off a title, have great players, and big ambitions. I’m going to discover another league, another culture: I thank the club for the trust they have shown in me. As everywhere I have been, I will try to repay it in the best way possible.
Do you have a message for the club or the supporters?
Simply, thank you for these 3 seasons. I wish the best for Nice and the people of Nice.
