The Left Front aims to oppose two majorities: the national one, that of the Socialist Government, and the local one, that of Christian Estrosi and the UMP (the order is intentional given the personal impact of the Mayor of Nice on the running of municipal affairs).
This political stance is reflected in this statement regarding the issue of school schedules and extracurricular activities: the Government and the Mayor of Nice are in the same position, both accused for different but complementary reasons.
This might seem illogical, but isnโt politics the art of the possible?
School schedules: Estrosi reinforces the negative effects of the government’s policy and promotes urban segregation.
The modification of school schedules imposed, without consultation, by the government marks a further disengagement of the State from its responsibilities. It already has negative repercussions for children, families, National Education staff, local authorities, and community organizations.
We will support the mobilizations demanding the abandonment of this school schedule organization and the opening of a broad debate for a true reform of school schedules.
To this already dramatic situation, the Mayor of Nice decided to add more. To offset the financial cost of this reform for local authorities, he decided, with the UMP majority, to charge families for after-school care.
This decision poses an additional difficulty for thousands of households already severely impacted by the austerity policy led by the government. The consequences of such a decision are catastrophic for families that do not have the financial means or possibility to pick up their children at 3:45 PM. It is not surprising that in the most popular neighborhoods, the enrollment rate is very low (less than 25%).
Worsening the situation for our most struggling fellow citizens is not how we can improve it.
The decision of the Mayor of Nice has only one consequence: it reinforces the negative effects of the government’s policy and promotes urban segregation.
Only one good decision is necessary today: the abandonment of the fee and the free enrollment of children in activities.
