The entire membership of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) today unanimously approved the 40 recommendations that make up the Olympic Agenda 2020, a strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement, during the 127th IOC Session in Monaco.
“Now that you have approved all 40 recommendations, you can see the picture of the future we are envisioning, one of progress to preserve the unique character of the Olympic Games. One of progress to promote Olympic values. One of progress to strengthen the place of sport in society,” said President Bach to the present members.
The decision made by the General Assembly on Monday in Monaco was to make it possible for two countries to submit a joint bid for geographical reasons in the case of the Winter Games.
In clear terms, neighboring countries will now be able to imagine joining forces if they share the same mountain.
Some competitions of the Summer Games may take place in cities different from the host city for team sports up to the quarter-finals.
At this point, what if the whole Île-de-France region were to submit a bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games?
The Olympic program: the IOC is now showing great flexibility, to “encourage diversity,” explained its president.
It will thus be possible to see 29 or 30 sports included in the program of the 2020 Games in Tokyo, compared to 26 in London in 2012, but without exceeding the cap of 10,500 athletes and 306 events.
