After more than five years of a war in Europe that claimed the lives of tens of millions of people, the Allied forces entered Germany in February 1945. Three days after Adolf Hitler’s suicide in his bunker on April 30, the Nazi troops defending Berlin surrendered on May 2, 1945.

On the night of May 6 to 7, General Alfred Jodl โ€“ Chief of Staff of the Wehrmacht โ€“ signed the unconditional surrender of Germany in Reims. The act of surrender set the cessation of hostilities for May 8 at 11:01 PM.

A new act of surrender of the Third Reich was then signed in Berlin between the German and Allied military commands. The war officially ended on the European continent.


Ceremonies are permitted this Friday only in departmental capitals and cities, without public attendance, as indicated by the Elysรฉe.

To respect the duty of remembrance, the prefect and mayors will be authorized to lay a wreath of flowers at the war memorial, without the presence of the public, strictly adhering to distancing measures.

In Nice, a ceremony will take place at the Monuments aux Morts at Rauba Capeรน in the presence of Bernard Gonzalez, Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes; Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, & Rรฉmy Giacchero, representative of the National Office for Veterans and War Victims.
