The city of Nice is used to having a “Super Smash Bros.” competition every week on Saturdays. But since this Thursday evening, two tournaments are being organized to better bring the community together after a recent restart due to Covid-19.
Three weeks after the local competitions resumed, a new day of the week has been transformed into a day of battles. Thursday evening at LOGIN (15 avenue Notre Dame), competitors were invited to the inaugural session of this new weekly tournament. Surprisingly, this new event has been more popular than the usual Saturday one. The tournament started at 7pm for the registered players, but by 6pm, the venue was filled with regulars and new faces. So much so that some registered players couldnโt practice from 6pm to 7pm, as there were fewer Nintendo Switch consoles than people present. During the session on Saturday, July 25th, there were about twenty competitors with very few new players. But during the Smash LogDown, around thirty people registered, with several new faces. The popularity of these tournaments continues to grow, attracting more and more enthusiasts from Nice and its surroundings. And the newcomers are not left behind, as they are warmly welcomed, whether itโs to answer their questions about the rules or simply to give them advice in case of defeat.
A New Day to Train
The Smash LogDown is an opportunity for anyone who enjoys facing other players to do so one more time per week. “At the tournaments, there’s a good atmosphere, and everyone is nice,” explains Louis Kouyoumdjian, a 17-year-old student. For him, it’s a chance to test himself and learn from other players, even in defeat. “I started these competitions two years ago and since then I have improved a lot. I go whenever I can because the thrill of the battles is something I particularly enjoy,” he notes. He is therefore more than happy to have a new day of the week where he can meet his friends and practice a bit more, with the aim of one day achieving first place at one of these gatherings.
