The animal rights organization, PETA, has invited via a press release the town halls of several major cities in France, including Nice, to stop serving foie gras at official events.
The association wanted to remind everyone that foie gras comes from geese and ducks โcondemned to a life of sufferingโ and are force-fed to the extent that their livers reach 10 times their normal size. It adds that force-feeding is banned in several European countries because of its cruelty, and that the European Union even opposed it in 1998 with a directive.
It also reminded that plant-based alternatives are now available and that more and more of these alternatives are being developed in France. It also emphasizes that the government should help foie gras producers transition to cruelty-free products made in France. The association has furthermore sent a basket of โfaux grasโ to the city of Strasbourg, which has just committed to no longer serving foie gras at its municipal events, following the lead of cities such as Grenoble, Lyon, Villeurbanne, and Besanรงon.
PETA thus invites the cities of Nice, Annecy, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Marseille, and others to stop serving this product โderived from animal sufferingโ at official events. It also encourages them to support ethical French companies that make vegan products.
The animal rights association also invites the public to send a message to their town hall asking them to stop this practice.
