For several weeks, the viral circulation of Covid-19 has not weakened in the PACA region and remains at a very high level. In light of this unfavorable situation and the resulting pressure on the hospital system, the Regional Health Agency of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur has decided to activate the fifth level of the crisis management plan.
This initial level of stage 5 involves postponing all activities that do not lead to a loss of opportunity for patients.
The objective is to increase the capacity of intensive care beds to between 810 and 820 beds. Currently, 777 beds are open in the region. Also, to redeploy healthcare personnel to strengthen critical care units.
Beyond access to recourse care (sampling and transplants, cancer treatment, urgent targeted surgery), the continuation of abortion services is also guaranteed as well as close monitoring of chronic patients.
The situation in healthcare facilities
While the pressure on medical services has slightly decreased, the strain on critical care is intensifying.
Today, 1,469 people are hospitalized in medical care and 510 people are in critical care for Covid-19.
Medical evacuations to relieve the region’s intensive care units
As part of national solidarity, to relieve the intensive care units of our region and maintain urgent surgical activity, patient transfer operations are regularly organized to the regions Occitanie, Brittany, and Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
Since February 24, 50 medical evacuations have been carried out in close collaboration with the concerned Regional Health Agencies, the Samu, the medical teams of healthcare facilities, civil security, and the Prefectures of the destination departments.
