It was above all a duty to convene an extraordinary session of the Municipal Council to express its position on the ongoing war on Ukrainian territory following the aggression of the Russian armed forces.
This was done this morning before the ordinary Municipal Council meeting.
Of course, the humanitarian aspect was at the center of deliberations before any other political or geostrategic considerations.
The recent demonstrations in support of the Ukrainian people that took place on the Promenade des Anglais did not need to be recalled, and unanimity was achieved after the introductory speech by the Mayor of Nice, who still wanted to mention the economic impact that this war will have on the economy of the Cรดte d’Azur. Thus, tourism, commercial exchanges, and energy supplies will certainly be affected, even if at this stage, any forecast is premature.
But this morning, the focus was not on the economy, but on how real help could be provided to the population remaining on site and those who had to flee, leaving their homes and livelihoods behind.
The oppositions supported the proposed deliberations with their vote, each group emphasizing their affinities: the humanitarian aspect for Madame Chesnel (EE-LV) and the geopolitical aspect for Philippe Vardon (RN).
Nice assures the Ukrainians of its solidarity and support in the face of the tragic ordeal they are experiencing. To make this aid concrete, the City is organizing, under the aegis of the metropolitan agency for health, environmental, and risk management, to address three priorities: financial donations, material aid, and the reception of refugees.
Actions will follow depending on the evolution of the situation.
