After a shortened carnival in 2020 and a cancellation the following year, the 2022 edition marked a reunion. Christian Estrosi wanted to praise this “carnival of renewal” and all those who participated in it.
With its 107,990 spectators, more than 30 million euros in economic benefits, and over 1,400 people who worked on it, the 2022 Nice carnival turned out to be a great success.
Yet, with the fifth wave of Covid-19 that hit France hard last January, nothing was certain, and the mayor of Nice acknowledged taking a “big risk” by maintaining it. He felt it was necessary to keep it “for the local economy, the city’s image, and the hope everyone had put in over two years, trying to imagine this carnival.”
For this 137th edition of the Nice carnival, young and old alike were able to enjoy the various activities, from the flower battles to the carnival parades, including this year’s new features: the carnival village on the green belt, a foreign carnival as the guest of honor, and a colorful opening ceremony.
For its grand return, this carnival “King of Animals” managed to make headlines both in France and around the world. “The city most talked about for a festive event worldwide, for more than ten days, was Nice,” declared Christian Estrosi during a thank-you ceremony.
This friendly ceremony concluded with a goodbye, before meeting again from February 10 to 26, 2023, for the 150th anniversary of the carnival which will honor the “King of the World’s Treasures.”
