As the government could soon decide on a third lockdown, given the results in dealing with the Covid-19 health crisis, the mayor of the city of Nice, Christian Estrosi, is convening healthcare professionals this Monday.
For the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, it’s time to take action. The latest indicators related to the Covid-19 epidemic in the Alpes-Maritimes department have shown an increase in infections and admissions to intensive care. These figures clearly indicate a relaxation observed in public spaces by the city services and the Municipal Police since the start of the Christmas holidays.
The mayor addresses the crisis
In response to this situation, the president of the Nice Cรดte dโAzur Metropolis will convene his newly appointed Local Public Health Council this Monday, December 28, 2020, by videoconference, in order to review the situation.
Composed of Professor Michel Carles, infectious disease specialist at the Nice University Hospital, Professor Christian Pradier, head of the public health department at Nice University Hospital, Dr. Vรฉronique Mondain, head of the infectious diseases department at the Archet Hospital, and Dr. Richard Chemla, deputy mayor in charge of Health, Environment, and Well-being, the local public health council of the city of Nice was created in November 2020 at the initiative of Christian Estrosi to provide coordinated and effective responses during a health crisis like the current one.
Some indicator figures
The indicator results are undeniable. First, there is an increase in the bed occupancy rate in the Covid unit of the Nice University Hospital, with about fifteen additional admissions recorded within a week, bringing the total to 57 occupied beds in the Covid unit. Then, the positivity rate rose to 7% from 5.5% last week, with 2,747 positive people according to figures from the Regional Health Agency.
According to the city hall, a noticeable increase in fines issued by the Municipal Police was observed only on December 23. More than 50% of these fines were due to a lack of travel permits. Nineteen fines for not wearing a mask in public spaces were also recorded.
As a result, the municipal police have found it necessary to reinforce controls since following barrier gestures has been difficult lately. The municipality emphasizes that โwhile the Christmas holidays have allowed many to reunite with family and friends, the City’s services and the municipal police have noticed, far too often, a relaxation in respecting barrier gestures and social distancing. Unfortunately, this negligence is reflected in increasing figures over the past 48 hours.โ
