The limping devil, the prince of diplomats. Between disdain and praise, there is the character, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand Périgord. This man, former bishop of Autun and a major player in the revolution, was part of every regime and knew how to bend and adapt like a reed.
He was completely indifferent to disdain, feeling far above those who despised him, and equally nonchalant towards flatterers, being well aware of La Fontaine’s fable on the matter.
Emmanuel De Waresquiel describes this man by taking us behind the scenes of power. Talleyrand is, in a certain way, the father of modern law, of the notion of State before Nation, of Public Law. He could have been one of the founding fathers of Europe, this finally united Europe, and he would certainly have been an essential figure in globalization.
Talleyrand, a man of our time in a century still dusted with old notions, those that would bloodshed Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries.
