Jean-Michel Blanquer, the Minister of National Education and Youth, visited Nice this Thursday. He visited the Auber Elementary School to observe the work done by teachers on the subject of “memory and transmission” in partnership with the Camp des Milles Memorial Site.
In the schoolyard of Auber Elementary, not far from Nice-Ville train station, Jean-Michel Blanquer and Christian Estrosi paused. Above them is the commemorative plaque for the children deported during World War II. 400 of them lived on the Cรดte dโAzur.
The Minister engaged in discussions with the students of a fifth-grade class about this terrible period in history. The teachers are doing genuine educational work, raising awareness among the younger generation with an emphasis on the transmission of memory, even the darkest parts.
He also announced the creation of a platform for educational staff and students. This platform will allow for the reporting of racist and anti-Semitic acts. Complaints will be forwarded to a competent academic team that will take appropriate action. โAll educational staff should feel supported,โ stated Jean-Michel Blanquer.
A small group of protesters from the National Union of Secondary School Teachers gathered near the school to express their disagreement with the measures taken by the government, particularly concerning high school reform. โWe wanted to remind the Minister that the majority of the profession does not support this policy,โ explained Jean-Paul Clot, Deputy Secretary of SNES.
