Christian Estrosi spoke this Thursday, December 8, about the redevelopment project for Port Lympia. The Mayor met with local residents, professionals, merchants, associations, and neighborhood committees of the Port to discuss this topic.
It was last June 2 that the Mayor presented the requalification plan for the Port of Nice, following a long consultation with Olivier Bettati. Christian Estrosi revisited this essential subject this Thursday, December 8, to provide more details.
A first phase of transformation of the bassin Lympia, then on the Quai du Commerce
This requalification project will be carried out by a port company, which is expected to be operational from 2023. This will launch the first phase of requalification of the bassin Lympia from West to East, with the following planned creations:
- High-quality pedestrian areas for strolling, shaded by large Mediterranean trees and monitored by video surveillance.
- The restoration of Notre-Dame Church, which will be completed in 2023.
- A large garden in place of the current surface parking lot on quai Infernet, with a positive impact for parking (eventually, with the reconstruction of the parking in a structure on quai Infernet and 100 more spots on the top level of parking Lympia, this represents 105 additional spaces compared to today).
- The creation of a large fish market to develop short supply chains and a new market for metropolitan products.
- The restructuring of the dyke, which represents the largest construction site and will allow for the installation of a renewable energy source, with the implementation of a geothermal system throughout the neighborhood.
Subsequently, the requalification will extend to the Quai du Commerce, which is still the subject of extensive studies. The redevelopments have the same approach as those of the bassin Lympia.
Roadmap for the first 100 days of the port company
The roadmap for the first 100 days of the port company was presented in the wake of Christian Estrosi. It will be launched at the beginning of 2023.
- The electrification of the docks will be launched from 2023, within the first eight months
- Building permits are almost finalized on Quai Infernet, to start the restructuring work
- Roadway improvements will begin on parts of Quais Lunel and Entrecasteaux, including:
- New benches with armrests
- Ground lighting and replacement of the lamps
- Planting of large trees suitable for the Mediterranean climate and climate change, to provide shade and capture pollutants, from parking du Phare to Rue Robilant
- Development of la Mouette facilities on the Entrecasteaux side
A Municipal Police Station dedicated to the Port
The installation of a Municipal Police Station dedicated to the Port and the coastal strip is announced in parallel. It is planned for 2023 within the Ports d’Azur authority’s facilities at Quai Lunel, near Robilant.
About fifteen police officers will be assigned, with an additional reception area for residents and users. The facility is already equipped with screens to view all the cameras in the port area. This will make it a real โCSU du Portโ, not to mention the nautical means that will significantly aid the police units.
Unchanged traffic plan, situation of antique dealers and Puces de Nice
As for the traffic plan of the Port, there are no immediate changes planned.
- The Place Yves Klein, which has been reopened, will remain that way, even after the landscaping work on the Promenade du Paillon
- The requalified Place Cassini will remain one-way between Place Ile de Beautรฉ and Place Garibaldi, in the same direction as today
- The traffic plan for Rue Barla remains unchanged
- There will still be two-way traffic on Place Ile de Beautรฉ. Planning will be defined according to other ongoing projects.
- Traffic will also be maintained on Rue Fodรฉrรฉ
As for antique dealers wishing to organize flea markets, the esplanade will be available to them once a month. Regarding rumors about a real estate project at the Puces of Nice, the Mayor states that they are unfounded. He specifies that “meetings will be organized soon to see how it is possible to make this place even more attractive.”
Many positive impacts expected
Finally, the Mayor informs us that he wants this project to be “a collective work, carried out in the spirit of dialogue.” He recalls all the positive impacts that this requalification project will bring.
- More than 200 trees planted
- 8,500 square meters of greenery and cool islands
- Up to -5ยฐC in air temperature, -10ยฐC in perceived temperature for the human body during heatwaves, -30ยฐC in ground temperature during heatwaves
- 20% reduction in cardiovascular diseases thanks to the vegetation and the well-being it provides
- 35,000 mยฒ of requalified pedestrian spaces, with light coatings suitable for high temperatures
- 105 parking spaces
- All projects will be eco-friendly
