From July 1 to December 3, 2023, come and discover the fascinating world of tattoos in the land of the rising sun. “Tattoos of the Floating World, the Imagined Body in Japan” is an invitation to a historical and artistic journey.
Retracing more than 300 years of Japanese tattoo history, this exhibition illustrates the different meanings of inscriptions and body decorations. A true tradition in Japan, the art of tattoos is considered one of the most accomplished body ornaments in the world. Our gaze is thus immersed in the intimacy of bodies that only black ink seems to cover.
Furthermore, it is the first time in France that an exhibition is entirely dedicated to Japanese tattooing. Featuring 113 works, these can be found in a unique catalog accompanying the exhibition. This catalog also offers texts produced by renowned specialists of Japanese culture.
The land of the rising sun is teeming with artistic treasures, of which the Museum of Asian Arts is the ephemeral showcase. In addition to a wide selection of prints featuring tattooed figures, the exhibition has set up various immersive workshops. As a result, visitors can witness the preparation of ink dedicated to traditional tattooing, a true ritual. Alternatively, they can learn the technique of linocut to create traditional tattoo designs to print on the skin.
