From February 14 to May 27, 2024, the treasures of the Matisse collection will be presented off-site at the National Art Center in Tokyo for the Henri Matisse exhibition.

The Matisse Museum, an internationally renowned institution, will reveal for the first time to the Japanese public the extraordinary Henri Matisse collection. This collection, made up of donations from the painter and his heirs to the city of Nice, covers Henri Matisse’s early paintings to his final projects. It is part of one of the most important collections of the artist’s works in the world.

Thus, 145 works and objects from the Matisse collection will be lent to the National Art Center Museum in Tokyo, including one of the artist’s largest gouache works, Flowers and Fruits. At the initiative of this exceptional project: Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan’s main press organization.

Divided into five stages, the exhibition’s journey will lead the visitor to the final climax. It will highlight major pieces by Henri Matisse such as the Creole Dancer, Blue Nude IV, and the series of chasuble designs for the Vence chapel, with a visual reconstruction of the luminous splendor of the stained glass windows. Enough to amaze the Japanese public.

Temporary closure, exhibitions full of promises

On the occasion of this exceptional exhibition in Tokyo, the Matisse Museum will close its doors from January 9 to March 14, 2024 to complete a third phase of climate engineering work to improve the conditions for the conservation and presentation of works.

From March 16 to May 27, 2024, you can find at the Matisse Museum the exhibition “Djamel Tatah” showcasing around a hundred works from the Henri Matisse graphic art collection. As well as the MirรณMatisse exhibition “Beyond Imagines” dedicated to the relationships between the works of Henri Matisse and those of the Spanish artist Juan Miro, which will be available for viewing from June 28 to September 29, 2024.
