The fight against indecent attire is strengthening in Nice.

Latest News

A police operation took place yesterday, with Anthony Borrรฉ, first deputy mayor, present. Thus, a single objective: to remind people of the dress code in effect, despite the summer heat.

In 1999, the city of Nice had already taken measures to regulate clothing. This decree set decency rules, particularly for walking around the old town, in restaurants, and various shops. Since then, compliance with these norms has been part of the missions of the Municipal Police.

This Thursday, Anthony Borrรฉ, first deputy in charge of Proximity, Security, Housing, and Urban Renewal, accompanied a municipal police patrol to reiterate the importance of this mission. “This may seem trivial compared to the other checks, but there are no small matters for the municipal police, he stated, emphasizing the need to maintain a pleasant living environment for all.

Prevention rather than penalization

Under the sun, the municipal police slowly advance towards Cours Saleya. Anthony Borrรฉ emphasizes that the objective is not to systematically punish. “The goal is not to issue fines to everyone, but rather to conduct prevention”. Thus, the tone is set. The priority is to raise awareness rather than repress.

The municipal officers exchange a few words with shirtless passers-by, drawing attention to their inappropriate attire.

However, offenders are not systematically penalized. Since 2022, citations are rare. 10 in 2022, 7 in 2023, and already 13 recorded in 2024.

Ill-informed tourists

These checks often involve tourists. An Irishman, surprised by the patrol, explains that he was not aware of the rules in place. Just a few minutes earlier, a German was reminded of the rules after falling victim to a bag theft, inadvertently finding himself in violation.

The patrol continues its path, conversing with passers-by, often in English, to ensure the message is clear. The approach is educational, and the response is often understanding.

Meanwhile, the city of Nice aims to relaunch its 2022 communication campaign: “In Nice, I dress”. With only one goal: to ensure that tourists are better informed about the appropriate attire to wear in the city.
