Ironman 2025: What traffic restrictions should be expected?

Latest News

Numerous road closures, as well as closures of parking lots and bike lanes, will accompany the Ironman World Championship in Nice on September 14, 2025. Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians will need to adjust their travel plans.

The Ironman World Championship will take place on Sunday, September 14, 2025, in Nice. Like any major sporting event, it entails significant traffic regulation measures. The first measures will start on Thursday, September 11, and will continue until Tuesday, September 16. These measures affect road traffic, parking, access to parking lots, pedestrian traffic, and bike lanes.

Starting Thursday, September 11, between 1:30 PM and 4 PM, certain downtown roads will be closed to vehicles. Quai Rauba Capeu, Quai des ร‰tats-Unis, and several streets near Place Massรฉna will be affected. Vehicles leaving the Ponchettes will have limited access, first towards Promenade des Anglais, then towards the Port. These temporary restrictions will be implemented to set up part of the race infrastructure.

The most significant closures will begin on the evening of Saturday, September 13. From 8 PM, the northbound roadway of Promenade des Anglais and Avenue de Verdun will be closed. These restrictions will last until 5 AM on Monday, September 15. On Sunday, September 14, the day of the competition, the closure perimeter will expand to include numerous streets in the city center and the west of the city.

Restricted access throughout the city

In Vieux-Nice, entries and exits will be monitored. Descente Crotti will remain open at all times, while Descente Auguste Escoffier will serve as an exit. Residents will need to notify their movements in advance by contacting the number provided by the city (04 97 13 55 88).

On the western side, Promenade des Anglais will be closed from 2 AM on Sunday, September 14, between Rue Sauvan and Avenue des Grenouillรจres. The Magnan Tunnel and Carras Port will also be inaccessible to vehicles. Perpendicular roads leading to the Promenade will be dead-ended, but local access will still be possible.

The airport will not be spared. Between 5 AM and 7:30 PM on Sunday, access via Promenade des Anglais will be closed. Motorists will need to use the M6007 and M99 (riverside road). Travelers are advised to prioritize tram line 2 or the A8 highway. A window for traffic along the seafront will be open between 11 AM and 12 PM.

Parking is prohibited on many roads from Monday, September 8, until Tuesday, September 16. This includes Quai des ร‰tats-Unis, Avenue de Verdun, Promenade des Anglais, Avenue Max Gallo, Promenade Corniglion Molinier, and certain streets near Massรฉna and Vieux-Nice.

Parking lots, bike lanes, and pedestrian traffic

Several parking lots will remain open but with restricted access. The Rhul Mรฉridien parking lot will be accessible only via Avenue de Suรจde. The Palais de la Mรฉditerranรฉe parking lot will close its main entrance, but an exit will be possible via Rue du Congrรจs. The Palais Massรฉna parking lot will have its entrance on Promenade des Anglais closed, with alternate access set up via Rue de France. The Sulzer parking lot will also be closed at the entrance, with an exit via Rue Saint-Franรงois de Paule.

Pedestrians will also have to deal with limited crossings. During ancillary events (Fun Run and IronKids) as well as during the Ironman, certain pedestrian crossings will be neutralized. Crossings will only be possible under the supervision of marshals or security staff.

Cyclists will find several sections of bike lanes closed. This particularly affects Promenade des Anglais and Quai des ร‰tats-Unis. On Sunday, September 14, the lane running along the Promenade and Corniglion Molinier will be part of the running and cycling course. It will therefore remain closed to traffic all day.

The scope of the measures calls for residents and visitors to plan their trips in advance. The days before and after the competition will be marked by progressive closures, sometimes lasting several consecutive days. The tramway, peripheral parking lots, and the A8 highway should be favored to avoid blocked areas.

All updated information on traffic changes and bus routes is available on the Lignes dโ€™Azur website.
