Facing Romanian Jaqueline Cristian, Diane Parry made her entrance at the Rouen Open. The Nice player, in search of her first singles victory in six months, came close.

Diane Parry returned to court in singles this Tuesday, April 15, 2025 in the first round of the Rouen Open. Still seeking her first singles victory since her Billie Jean King Cup match last year, the Nice player was facing Romanian Jaqueline Cristian (26 years old, 66th in the world). A player in form as she was coming off a victory in a challenger tournament in Mexico.

The start of the match favored the French player. Diane Parry seemed to have regained her touch at the start of the clay season. First mentally thanks to her two victories earned last week in BJKC with Alizé Cornet, who had to withdraw yesterday. Physically, the Azure Coast player seemed more mobile, she who had been hindered by her knee injury sustained in BJKC last year during her last victory.

As a result, Diane Parry took more risks and it paid off. She managed to convert her only break point in the first set to lead (3-1). Encouraging but without other opportunities it’s difficult to sustain over time. And indeed over time the Romanian will find it in her shots. Very powerful on this fairly slow clay court, Jaqueline Cristian’s forehand is devastating. She forces Diane Parry’s errors and comes back into the match. Less comfortable on her serve, the Nice player resists as best she can by saving several break points but ends up giving way at the worst moment on the fifth opposing chance. Diane Parry loses the first set (6-4).

A risky strategy that pays off but proves insufficient for Diane Parry

After a break before continuing the match, Diane Parry returns with more intention. Offensive, the Maralpine player manages to implement her variation game. Without getting break opportunities at the start of the second set, we feel that the match is becoming more balanced. But at (3-2), Jaqueline Cristian eventually regains control of the exchange and forces the break by controlling the backhand slices of the French player. With her back against the wall, Diane Parry lets loose with her shots. Except that confidence is at its maximum across the net. The Romanian seems untouchable. The match intensifies and could swing either way. Tested in the following game, Jaqueline Cristian proves very solid on serve, preventing any comeback attempt from the French player.

After saving a break-back point, Jaqueline Cristian wins in the first round (6-4/6-3). A “encouraging” loss in the true sense of the term because we often felt that the Nice player was capable of coming back into the match. Diane Parry’s first victory on the WTA circuit should come very soon!

In the meantime we should see Fiona Ferro on Wednesday on the court of the Rouen Open against Jessika Ponchet.
