Saturday, February 28 at 10:30 PM, at the level of Opera Beach, on the mythical Promenade des Anglais, the people of Nice gathered to witness the incineration of the carnival sovereign, the ultimate ritual of the Nice Carnival.

In Nice, the Carnival does not end, it is passed on. And Saturday evening, it was the entire soul of Nice that found itself facing the sea to honor one of its oldest traditions: the incineration of his majesty the king (consort)!

More than a spectacle, it is a tradition deeply rooted in local history. For more than 150 years, generation after generation, Niçois families come to witness this symbolic moment when the King goes up in smoke, carrying away with him the excesses and follies of winter.

A Queen in power… a King in flames!

This year, the theme “Long Live the Queen” honored the feminine figure. Yes, the Queen was indeed the sovereign of this 2026 edition. But in Nice, we do not break the rules: it is the King that we burn, even if “consort”!

In Nice, you can modernize, you can adapt… but you do not break with tradition! And for the first time in the history of the Nice Carnival, it was not a reigning King who was incinerated… but a consort King. A first in more than 150 years of existence. A strong symbolic evolution, but always in respect of the immutable ritual.

A popular rite facing the sea

When the king catches fire, silence reigns, an almost solemn silence that preceded the applause.

This moment belongs to the people of Nice and to the world. It is not merely touristy. It is identity. It is passed down by the elders, awaited by the children, told as a childhood memory that is relived every year. Whether you’re from here or elsewhere!

Come as neighbors, as family, between friends, between strangers, or simply between people of Nice as they have done forever… (note: always in Niçois).

With the flames reflecting on the Mediterranean, waiting for next year! (note: next year in Niçois) illuminating the faces of the inhabitants, and soon the firefighters’ hoses come into action!

The fireworks that followed lit up the Bay of Angels, aided by thousands of phones, bouncing the ball back to the stars!

Offering a brilliant finale to several weeks of celebration. Where colors mingled with sea spray, the “ohs” and “ahs” rose from the Promenade des Anglais, and you could feel in the air this “discreet pride” unique to the people of Nice: that of keeping a unique tradition alive!

In Nice, the King may change, the Queen may reign, the themes may evolve… but as long as the flames rise facing the sea, the spirit of the Carnival will remain deeply Niçois, faithful to its history, to its city and to its people. And as the Niçois anthem so well says: Viva! Viva! Nissa La Bella!

Nissa La Bella

Verse 1

O my beautiful Nice, Queen of flowers,
Your old roofs, I will sing forever.
I will sing of the mountains, your rich decoration
Your green countryside, your great golden sun

Chorus
Forever I will sing, under your arbors
Your azure sea, your pure sky,
And forever I will cry, in my little song
Viva, viva, Nice the Beautiful!

Verse 2
I sing of the bonnet, the rose and the lilac,
The Port and the Marina, Paillon, Mascouinà!
I sing of the mansard, where songs are born,
The spindle, the distaff, my beautiful Nanon

Verse 3
I sing our glory, the ancient and beautiful oil lamp,
The victories of the dungeon, the scent of your spring!
I sing of old Sincaire, your white flag,
Then my mother’s cradle, the most beautiful in the world.
