The Marc Chagall National Museum in Nice is preparing to host the major Chagall Couture exhibition from October 10, 2026 to May 23, 2027. This artistic event will highlight seventy-six unpublished textile creations resulting from a collaborative effort undertaken over two years with students and teachers of the National Diploma in Arts and Design Crafts (DN MADE) specializing in Stage Costume at the Les Coteaux de Cannes secondary school.

The exhibition will be organized in two distinct parts. The first part will run until January 18, 2027 around the engravings of Dead Souls and the chromatic nuances of the Biblical Message. The second part will take over from February 6 to May 23, 2027 to reveal the interpretation of La Fontaine’s Fables and major figures from the Biblical Message. Throughout the journey, from October 10, 2026 to May 23, 2027, visitors will be able to admire the series of light headdresses inspired by the stained glass window The Blue Rose.

Marc Chagall was born on July 7, 1887 in Vitebsk in the Russian Empire within a Jewish family. After initial training with academic painter Yury Pen in 1906, the artist moved to Paris in 1911 and settled in 1912 in the artist collective La Ruche. There he formed friendships with poets Blaise Cendrars, Max Jacob, André Salmon, and Guillaume Apollinaire.

Throughout his career, Marc Chagall maintained a passion for performing arts and textiles. He created sets and costumes for the Kamerny Jewish National Theatre of Moscow in 1920, the Ballet Theatre of New York with Aleko in 1942 and The Firebird in 1945, the Garnier Opera House with Daphnis and Chloé in 1958, then the Metropolitan Opera in New York with The Magic Flute in 1966.

For the art of stained glass, the artist expressed his perception with these words: “it is a mystical thing that passes through the window” and “a coloration, a world, another world that is not that of painting.” Concerning the illustration of Nicolas Gogol’s work, the literary encounter will highlight an author who “warms the heart” of the painter. For the Fables of Jean de La Fontaine, the artistic approach finds its source in the observation of animals “well-fed” from the French countryside observed in Auvergne and in the South.

As the highlight of the event, the students will organize a fashion show of these textile pieces during the European Night of Museums, Saturday, May 22, 2027.
