Jean Moulin’s Apartment: Controversial Response from the Mayor of Nice to Patrick Allemand

Latest News

Following the open letter addressed by Patrick Allemand to the Mayor of Nice, asking him to exercise the right of preemption for the purchase of the apartment in Nice where the Resistance hero Jean Moulin lived and which is currently being sold by its current owner, the City of Nice would like to make the following clarifications:

“As for the 35m² studio, which is inaccessible to the public, it is not located within the area of reinforced preemption rights, and Article L211-4 of the Urban Planning Code specifies that the right of preemption does not apply to the alienation of one or several lots constituted by a single dwelling unit. Moreover, a sales agreement already exists for this apartment.”

Christian Estrosi’s involvement in the numerous tributes to the great men who fought for our freedom demonstrates his unwavering commitment to our history.

As part of the commemoration of the sixtieth anniversary of the Liberation of the Alpes-Maritimes in 2004, Christian Estrosi, for the first time in France, as President of the General Council of Alpes-Maritimes, dedicated an exhibition to the works of Jean Moulin.

This exhibition, titled “Jean Moulin, the Artist Resistant,” showcased works created by the artist and previously displayed in his Romanin gallery, the official cover for his clandestine activities. Ms. Suzanne Escoffier and Ms. Andrée Dubois, cousins of Jean Moulin, attended the opening. A catalog, with a preface by Daniel Cordier, secretary, and a testimony by Colette Pons, was published on this occasion by the General Council. The exhibition was a great success, with nearly 12,000 visitors.

In the same spirit, the City of Nice has installed a commemorative stele for Jean Moulin in Place de la Libération, as well as a statue of General de Gaulle.

The patriotic events program of the City of Nice includes, for the 70th anniversary of Jean Moulin’s tragic death, murdered by the Gestapo, a new exhibition and a commemoration in his honor in July 2013.

“While some people are content to comment, I have taken action, and I will continue to do so, in defending this duty of memory,” asserted Christian Estrosi, Deputy Mayor of Nice, President of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis.

*Our commentary:

Patrick Allemand>Christian Estrosi is like cats and dogs!

In this case, it’s ‘instrumentalization> controversy’, a poorly framed request against a misaligned response.

Was it impossible to directly contact the owner in a timely manner?*
