Europe is overwhelmed. It’s a surge. A stream of migrants is invading Europe.
Some politicians, in order to ease their conscience, have revived the old slogan: “our countries are not destined to host all the world’s misery”.
Mr. Sarkozy, for his part, talks about social tourism. How cynical must one be to imagine that entire families would subject themselves to such migration conditions, without guaranteed success, purely for tourism?
When they are not fleeing war, they are fleeing dictatorships, the consequences of climate change. They flee to survive, even if it means risking death. But some die, even children…
And yet, those others are now facing death in these countries, and they come knocking at our doors.
Certainly, we cannot change everything overnight, and urgent solutions must be found.
We have a duty of solidarity to welcome these desperate people humanely and wisely, whether temporarily or permanently.
A good portion of the incoming populations belongs to the educated classes of their countries. The challenge is also to consider these opportunities as a springboard for genuine dialogue between civilizations.
