The draw for the 2025 edition of the Roland-Garros tournament took place this afternoon. Diane Parry was rather lucky to avoid a seed as she will face a young American, Robin Montgomery.
Guest of honor at the draw ceremony for this new edition of the French Grand Slam, Ousmane Dembélé was kind to our only representative from the Azur region. Diane Parry indeed drew a first round within her reach against a young player, Robin Montgomery (20 years old, 116th in the world). The American just barely qualified for the main draw thanks to her ranking at the beginning of May (around the 100th place in the world). Since then, she has struggled to string matches together, having only participated in the first round in Madrid where she was beaten by the Japanese Moyuka Uchijima (23 years old, 58th in the world).
Robin Montgomery is not a clay court specialist, in line with the majority of her compatriots. However, her record remains acceptable with only 23 defeats for 27 victories on clay. Although most of these successes date back to the start of her career in 2021, she remains a player to be wary of.
Moreover, Diane Parry is experiencing a difficult year, marked by physical setbacks. Having returned to a good level at the Masters 1000 in Madrid, a new injury disrupted her preparation in Saint-Malo during her match against Naomi Osaka. While it was thought that the Nice-born player would rest before the tournament began, for which she received a wildcard entry into the main draw, she participated in the WTA 500 in Strasbourg. It was a good warm-up, as she managed to reach the second round before finally being defeated by Liudmila Samsonova in two close sets.
It remains to be seen under what conditions she will approach her first round on Sunday or Monday. Notably, Diane Parry has always advanced past the round of 64 at Roland-Garros in the last three editions of the Grand Slam at Porte d’Auteuil.
