Aware of the richness of the coastline and the azure marine environment, and sharing common concerns about preserving their attractions and uses, 10 coastal municipalities, along with the 5 associated watersheds, have equipped themselves with a joint management tool for the future of these environments: the Bay of Azur contract.

This comprehensive and concerted approach, coordinated and supported by the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur, is a strong commitment towards:

  • the preservation and improvement of the quality of waters in the environment, along with coordination with those of coastal rivers;
  • the protection and enhancement of aquatic natural environments;
  • raising awareness regarding the environmental quality of these environments.

This initiative, which brings together all stakeholders in the life of the coastline, is aligned with all current or planned initiatives on coastal rivers as well as the marine environment (such as Natura 2000 at sea, River contracts, etc.).

This approach is proposed at the scale of the Baie des Anges, covering a coastal stretch of 70 km from Antibes to Cap d’Ail and including the municipalities of Antibes, Villeneuve-Loubet, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Saint-Laurent-du-Var, Nice, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Eze, Cap d’Ail, as well as the watersheds of the Brague, Loup, Cagne, Var, and Paillons rivers.

The Bay of Azur contract takes effect at the beginning of 2012 for a duration of 5 years and will be signed by all 35 signatories.
