As every year since its creation in 1995, the Collective for the fight against AIDS in the Alpes Maritime (ten local associations including Les Ouvreurs) is organizing several events to mark World AIDS Day.
This year, Collective 06 is structuring its awareness campaign around three main themes, aiming to engage the general public on the responsibility of each individual in the face of the epidemic’s evolution.
A video clip produced by Les Ouvreurs for the Collective offers, for the first time dynamically, advice on how to better protect oneself against the disease.
UNAIDS published its new report showing that the year 2011 has changed the paradigm in the AIDS response, with unprecedented advances in science, political leadership, and results.
According to the report, 34 million people were living with HIV worldwide at the end of 2010. The report also indicates that new HIV infections have fallen to their lowest levels: with 2.7 million in 2010, new HIV infections have decreased by 21% since 1997.
In France, approximately 150,000 people are HIV positive, 27,000 are living with AIDS, and 6,000 to 7,000 people discover their HIV status each year.
While the AIDS epidemic seems to be stabilizing in France and globally, the figures communicated by the Institut de Veille Sanitaire are worrying in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur with an increase in HIV discoveries between 2008 and 2009, an increase that is confirmed and accentuated over the first six months of 2010.
With an 18% increase in HIV discoveries during the first six months of 2010 (compared to the early months of 2009), the situation is alarming. The HIV/AIDS epidemic in the PACA region remains persistent and active. (source Crips Paca as of 11/25/2011)
