โ “The Beginnings of Niceโs Baroque and the Genoese Artistic Influence”
On the occasion of this conference, Charles Astro, Chief Curator of the Palais Lascaris, will discuss “The Beginnings of Niceโs Baroque and the Genoese Artistic Influence”.
The first signature monuments of Niceโs baroque were built in the 17th century, within the context of the religious renewal of the Counter-Reformation and the urban planning projects desired by the Dukes of Savoy for the City of Nice. Thus, the Jesuit church and, from 1650, the new cathedral follow the great Roman architectural models, while their magnificent interior decoration, like that of the Palais Lascaris, carried out by workshops of stucco workers and painters, is mainly claimed to be influenced by Genoese artistic input introduced from Liguria and the Principality of Monaco.
