Victor Emmanuel II, King of Italy

Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy was born on March 14, 1820, in Turin and died on January 9, 1878, in Rome.

He was Prince of Piedmont, Duke of Savoy, Count of Nice, and King of Sardinia from 1849 to 1861 and became the first King of Italy on March 17, 1861, until his death.

Victor Emmanuel reflects the situation of the Italian peninsula in the 19th century.
Son of Charles Albert and Queen Theresa, daughter of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinand, he centralized the authority of the two main Italian houses.

Forced to sign the Treaty of Milan on August 6, 1849, Victor Emmanuel remained faithful to his father’s commitments and the dynastic policy of forming a unified and free Italian state.

He posed as a champion of freedom, which earned him the nickname of the gentleman king (re galatuomo).

The accomplishment of Italian unification earned him the title of Father of the Fatherland (Padre della Patria).
He implemented a policy that met all the aspirations of the Italians, allowing him to enjoy great popularity throughout his reign.
