On October 1st, several provisions of the law from March 22, 2016, aimed at strengthening the prevention and fight against incivilities, threats to public safety, and terrorist acts in public passenger transport, came into effect.
The measures that have come into force significantly enhance the operational capacities of the internal security service agents of SNCF (SUGE) and RATP (GPSR), who play a crucial role in public safety in transport.
The opportunities for these agents to carry out their duties in civilian clothing and while armed have thus been extended.
These agents are also now authorized, in cases of severe threats identified by the prefect, to conduct security pat-downs, notably at the entrance of stations or trains.
They are also subject to conditions of experience, training, and prefectoral approval for this purpose.
Since the enactment of the law on March 22, 2016, they have already been authorized to conduct visual inspections and checks of passengers’ luggage.
