Smile, you’re being filmed: While the city of Nice has already conducted an experiment during the carnival and another is to be attempted at the entrances of the Eucalyptus high school (Nice) and Ampère high school (Marseille), the San Francisco City Council has taken a completely opposite approach by passing a regulation prohibiting the police from using facial recognition technology.
The regulation also requires city services to disclose information about other surveillance technologies currently in use. The collection or storage of an individual’s data is also subject to safeguards. “We can be safe without becoming a security state, we can have good police services without being a police state,” justified an elected official quoted by the press.
