As part of the Queer Film Festival in Nice, the 5th edition of “Short Films in Freedom” took place this Friday afternoon at the auditorium of the Louis Nucera Library. The session was held in the presence of Charles Berling and the team from the Liberté Theater, a national stage in Toulon.
“Short Films in Freedom” offers the opportunity for about a hundred young middle and high school students from Toulon to write, direct, and act in films on a specific awareness-raising theme related to citizenship. For the 2019 edition, the young participants tackled issues related to sexualities and the resulting discriminations. Four films were screened during the session at the Louis Nucera Library:
- “Les goûts et les couleurs” (Tastes and Colors) explores the notion of respect and togetherness through the lens of creating a massive rainbow flag by the young participants.
“Méduse” (Medusa) revisits the myth of this creature and its power of petrification, transforming it into an allegory of a dystopian and repressive society that attacks love between two people of the same sex.
“Un seul geste peut tout changer” (A Single Gesture Can Change Everything) confronts us with everyday bullying in the school environment and the rejection of difference.
“Le cœur a ses raisons” (The Heart Has Its Reasons) overturns heteronormative society by imagining that homosexuality becomes the “norm” and heterosexuality, a taboo.
The theater team, along with Charles Berling, extensively discussed the importance of making students creators by allowing them to fully express themselves. All this aims to bring about “a delightful blend of artistic expression and cultural action.”
