For the first time, a woman will lead the European executive. The “pink” ticket is completed with the appointment of Christine Lagarde to the ECB.
A first comment comes to us from Odile Menzozzi, president of the European Movement in the Alpes-Maritimes: “A top-notch and innovative casting for positions of power consecrates the ‘female gender’ and prioritizes, for once, the competence and qualifications of candidates for strategic positions in the EU. By appointing these two exceptional women, Germany and France secure key positions within European institutions while significantly altering the image of the European political space.”
The von der Leyen/Lagarde ticket allows France and Germany to each secure a significant European position, and enables the European right to retain the leadership of the Commission. Furthermore, it respects the parity desired by European leaders for positions of power.
The current Belgian liberal Prime Minister, Charles Michel, inherits the presidency of the European Council, while the position of High Representative for Foreign Affairs is entrusted to the Spanish socialist minister Josep Borrell.
Finally, the name of the Bulgarian socialist Sergei Stanishev is circulating for the presidency of the European Parliament, with the vote scheduled for this Wednesday.
