The Centennial Celebration of the Nation’s Wards

Latest News

This Saturday at 1:30 PM at Villa Masséna, the celebration of the Centenary of the Nation’s Wards will take place.

On this occasion, six Wards will be presented with a Nation’s Wards card and a Centenary medal.

The First World War left behind 600,000 widows and 986,000 orphans. It is in this context that the status of Nation’s Ward was established by the law of July 27, 1917. This law states that “France adopts the orphans whose father, mother, or breadwinner perished during the 1914 war, a military or civilian victim of the enemy.”

While the status initially focused on the victims of the 1914-1918 War, it now extends to all other conflicts. Thus, victims or children of victims of acts of terrorism also hold the status of Nation’s Wards.
