The Commemoration of the Centenary of the First World War: the War Memorial at Rauba-Capeù

Latest News

The exhibition Pierres Du Souvenir is part of the commemorations for the centenary of the First World War 2014-2018.

Centered around the rediscovery of the Monument aux Morts in Nice on the Rauba-Capeù quay and memories of the Poilus, this exhibition seeks to answer a question: How does the monument make collective memory visible in the city?

Inaugurated 90 years ago in the presence of Marshal Foch, and classified as a historical monument since 2011, this Art Deco jewel is one of the largest structures of its kind ever built, standing 32 meters high and 35 meters wide.

The exhibition also presents the notion of monument and memorial throughout the ages with the (re)discovery of stone or bronze monuments that bring to life the history of our city and its inhabitants, from the Trophy of Augustus in La Turbie, to the funerary steles and epigraphic dedications preserved at the Archaeological Museum of Cimiez: from Catherine Ségurane to Queen Victoria, from Masséna to Garibaldi, in happy days but also in more painful moments, where only cohesion, compassion, and civic commemoration allow the families of victims and the entire social body to rebuild.
