Clarins Trophy: Alizé Cornet Falls in the Quarterfinals

Latest News

In the quarter-finals of the Trophée Clarins, Alizé Cornet faced the American Katie Volynets (ranked 102nd in the world – 21 years old).

Facing the experience of the Nice-born player, Katie Volynets did not hesitate to engage in a baseline battle. Stronger than the French player, the American made the difference on a clay court that was faster than in recent days. On several occasions, Alizé Cornet attempted to come back but lacked consistency on her second serve towards the end of the set. She conceded the first set to Volynets (7-5).

In the second set, Cornet managed to take control of the rallies. Much more solid on serve, she won all her points on her first serve. This situation unsettled Volynets, causing her to make more errors. This was evident on the scoreboard: (6-2) for the player from Nice.

The final set was much more challenging. Alizé Cornet had to fight hard to save several break points at 4-1. She relied on the support of the Parisian crowd present in large numbers at the Lagardère Paris Racing. In vain… the young 21-year-old player seemed poised to win easily. This was underestimating the determination of the player from Nice, who fought back by breaking her opponent’s serve. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. She ultimately lost (7-5/2-6/6-2) in 2H41.
